MEDITATION

Where were you on September 11, 2001, at 8:46 a.m.? How many times did you have to see the images of those planes flying into the twin towers of New York City’s World Trade Center before you were able to believe it was really happening?

What about the morning of December 26, 2004? Do you remember how you felt when you heard the reports of the tsunami that broke across the Indian Ocean, leaving in its wake a staggering death toll and unimaginable devastation?

From time to time, we hear some leader or official talk about “life returning to normal,” and we can’t help but wonder: What does “normal” look like in a world filled with such violence, pain, and human tragedy?

Maybe our fundamental problem is that our “old normal” is defined by unreality—the notion that somehow we might have wealth enough, or education enough, or power enough to make ourselves secure from the world’s violence and uncertainty.

The message of Psalm 46 is stark and realistic. We live in a world marked by violence and upheaval, including

• the violence of nature—earthquakes, volcanoes, fl oods (verses 1-3)

• the violence of geopolitical turmoil (verse 6)

• the violence of war (verse 9)

Sometimes it feels as though the world is coming apart. Maybe it’s global turmoil far away. Maybe it’s personal turmoil, as close as your everyday life.

In the midst of it all, the psalmist reveals God’s work for us: “Be still, and know that I am God.”

What if God were to speak those words to you personally today? What if he were to bend down close, put his hands on your face, look you in the eye, call you by name, and whisper with that still, small voice, “Be still, and know that I am God”?

Listen to that voice and, in the following space, write out your reflections as you hear God say those words to you.
